Meg Hulme, Associate

Welcome to It’s All Hearsay! After a couple of years of tutoring and mentoring a variety of students, I have decided to collated all my knowledge and experience on a platform to help aspiring solicitors with their legal careers. I am here to guide you through your journey, whether that be at university, LPC or during the training contract process. I will be using this space to upload a variety of resource and tips to assist you in both your personal and professional development.

My journey to becoming a Trainee Solicitor was hard. I constantly felt alone and that there was no information out there. I spent four years trying to obtain a Training Contract, which was down to not understanding the process and feeling like I couldn’t reach out for help. Therefore, I ended up wasting a lot of time and effort!

I want to make sure no one feels the way I did. There is certainly an art to getting this journey right and while mistakes and setbacks are unavoidable, I want to be a person that will help you to never give up and also provide you with hints and tricks to get you there with a few less hiccups!

Work Experience

Mishcon de Reya
(2022 – present)
I act for insolvency practitioners, creditors, directors, and shareholders on disputes arising in the context of financial distress and insolvency (e.g., claims brought by and against officeholders, asset recovery, guarantee disputes, director’s duties, transaction avoidance and disqualification proceedings). I have experience of working on complex, multi-million-pound claims for high-profile clients.

Trowers & Hamlins LLP
(2020 – 2022)
My seats were Construction Litigation, Real Estate, Corporate and Employment.

SuperProf
(2018 – 2022)
I used to be a freelance tutor for English, Law, Dissertation proofing and Training Contract applications. I teach all ages and abilities. So far, I have successfully assisted many Law Students in securing interviews, vacation schemes and training contracts with their chosen firms while also achieving their target grades at University and on the LPC.

During these sessions, I have learnt to tailor my approach to my clients specific needs both during and outside the lesson. I ensure that all bases are covered and support is given in a clear and strategic manner. I provide materials and notes that I have taken over my legal education and professional career to assist with each students understanding.

I have had to acquire extensive knowledge of proofing dissertations, reviewing footnotes and bibliographies in accordance with OSCOLA and helping with general improvements to the overall essay.

I believe that my approach enables me to relate to my students and helps them to exceed their expectations when it comes to exams. I am adept at developing students’ self- esteem and their ability to overcome barriers to learning.

Mischon de Reya LLP
(2018 – 2020)
Whilst working in the Litigation department, I have learnt a multitude of legal practices and processes. These include drafting witness statements, making applications to the Supreme Court and working on challenging landmark cases.

While acting for the Appellant on urgent applications, I have demonstrated time management skills by adhering to deadlines and unpredictable time constraints under extreme pressure. This has furthered my ability to work comprehensibly in a legal environment.

I have also demonstrated that I can prioritise by working effectively on large disclosure exercises while meeting the expectations of the rest of my team. Using my initiative, working proactively and being incredibly organised has been imperative to ensure all client objectives are met.

One of my main roles at Mishcon de Reya is to complete complex research tasks on current and impacting issues. Here, I learnt to explain complicated legalese and summarise multi-faceted issues clearly. This has helped me to explain substantive information to clients in a concise and digestible manner.

I have also significantly increased my communication skills. This has been partly due to liaising with a variety of high-profile clientele, as well as, taking precise attendance notes and creating great rapports with my team.
